AMMONIA VS. FREON

An ideal refrigerant should be nontoxic, nonflammable, completely stable inside a system, environmentally friendly, and abundantly available or easy to manufacture.

It also would be self-lubricating, compatible with other materials used to fabricate and service refrigeration systems, easy to handle and detect, and low in cost. It would not require extreme pressures, either high or low.

Although neither ammonia nor Freon is an ideal refrigerant, there are advantages and disadvantages to both types. Refrigeration & Mechanical Services are capable of installing either type of chiller.

Pros and Cons of Ammonia

  • Ammonia is safe for the environment
  • Ammonia based refrigeration systems cost less build and install
  • Ammonia chillers have a better load capacity
  • Better heat transfer capabilities than chemical refrigerants
  • Ammonia generally costs less than most chemical refrigerants.
  • Can be poisonous in very high concentrations, but is easily detectable due to its strong smell. It is also lighter than air, so it evaporates very quickly into the atmosphere.
  • Cannot be used with copper pipes

Pros and Cons of Freon

  • Freon does not dissolve or evaporate.
  • You will only lose liquid from a leak.
  • If you purchase an air conditioner that uses R-410A, your HVAC technician will need to inspect your indoor unit to see if it meets the performance requirements of the R-410A system. If the indoor unit is older, it will likely need replacing.
  • Is typically harmful to the environment and is ozone depleting.

As you can see, there are several factors to consider when choosing which kind of refrigerant is best for your organization. Let us guide you through the process and save valuable time and resources.
